By now, everybody knows what Twitter is. If you don’t know what Twitter is then where have you been?
Twitter is a microblogging service that enables its users to send 140 character messages known as Tweets.
Finding local Twitter users in your area to follow is a great way to keep up to date with local news, weather and events happening around town.
Here are five services to help you locate nearby people who tweet.

Twitter Search Engine- Twitter’s very own search has an option to search “Near this place.” It can be found under the advanced tab.

Nearbytweets automatically determines where you are, and loads up a list of Twitter users nearby. You can also further filter the results by entering specific keywords in tweets.

Twellowhood is an interactive map that allows you to narrow down Twitter users by location.

tweepsearch.com is a Twitter bio and profile search. It also allows you to search by location. (Site takes a long time to load.)

LocaFollow is a Twitter app that allows you to find users based on bio and location.
Do you know of any other Twitter services that let you find users by location?

Wow, I had no idea these even existed except for a search on Twitter’s home page. Interesting how technology and something as cool as Twitter has done for the world. What will they think of next?

I guess I have trouble with understanding the spirit of twitter. On twitter it is ok to barge in on people and listen in (eavesdrop, if you will) while in the normal world it is nosy. I always feel pushy looking for people on Twitter, I think there is a social etiquette for Twitter which I don’t understand. Is their a guide for this or am I still missing the point?

I’m always more to “follow” the local folks, all other things being equal. They usually start following me, and I reciprocate.
