Blog Post Ideas

January 8th, 2010 by Rose DesRochers · 20 Comments

It happens to the best of us- Blogger’s block.

You sit down at your computer ready to write a blog post and suddenly you’re stumped with what to blog about. Don’t worry! There is a cure to overcoming blogger’s block.

Sometimes all it takes is someone to help spark your muse when you’ve run out of blog post ideas.

Hopefully my suggestions on what to blog about will help you overcome that dreaded blogger’s block.

Make a List!

Most of my search traffic comes from a list I wrote. Lists are very popular on blogs and you can write a list of almost anything from a list of your favorite blog themes to a list of your favorite horror movies. Write a list highlighting your top blog posts. The possibilities are endless.

Write a How to article.
You would be surprised at just how knowledgeable you might be. You could teach new bloggers what you’ve learned so far or you could teach your readers how to cook a turkey. Don’t laugh. Would you believe there were 49,301 searches last month alone on how to cook a turkey. Some other popular searches are: how to carve a pumpkin, how to build a fence, how to tie a tie.

Review a product or Service

Have you used a product or service that your readership might want to hear about? If so then why not write about it. You can also sign up for a service like blogvertise.com and get paid for your reviews.

Amazon.com is also a great way to research what products are popular. Sign up for their affiliate program and make some money from your posts.

Write a Controversial Post:

Controversial subjects can make for some great discussion. Give your opinions as to why you think a particular way be it on the topic of abortion, gay marriage or a controversial website like Miss Bimbo.

Ask Your Readers:

Who better to give you topics to blog about then your readership. Perhaps they’d be interested in hearing your opinion on a certain topic.

Write about something you have written about before:

Go through your blog and write a follow up post on something you’ve written about before or revise an old post and repost it.

Write about some spam you received:

One of my most commented post is about some spam I received. Often times when people receive spam they turn to Google searching to see if the email is legitimate.

Interview People in Your Niche:

I’ve written a number of interviews on my rose-desrochers.net blog. I’ve found that people are more than happy to answer a few questions about their life.

Write about a Myth

There are a number of myths that you can debunk.

For example: The poor man’s copyright trick is a myth and does not provide the legal backup a person needs for proving copyright ownership.

Answer questions:

I don’t know about you, but I get ask questions all the time be it in email or Twitter. The next time someone asks you question share the answer with your readership.

Search for Keywords:

Use a tool such as wordtracker.com. It will give you an idea of what topics are popular and you can write about those topics.

Also be sure to check out the trending hash tags on Twitter.

Blog about a strange new product:

Some of my most popular posts have been about strange gadgets.

Blog about irrelevant Search Terms:

View your Google Analytics and blog about the strange search terms that people are using to find your blog.

Rant:

Sometimes a good old fashion rant is all that’s needed. We all have things that annoy us. Why not rant about them. You can even turn the rant into a list of your pet peeves.

Share an story:

We all have a story to share and you never know what impact your story may have on those reading it. You never know: there story could very much be like your own.

Holiday writing:

Whenever a new holiday comes up take it your advantage to write about it. No holiday coming up then why not write about some strange holiday like National Chocolate Day.

Write about other Bloggers:

Many of us have been influenced by a blogger in the blogosphere. Why not write about them or link to something they’ve written on their blog and share your opinion.

Think outside of the box

Write about a topic you don’t know much about, but would like to learn more about. Spend some time researching then write about it citing your sources. ask your readerships opinion on the subject.

Guest Post:

Take a break from blogging and allow another blogger to write a guest post on your blog. Sometimes all we need is a break from blogging to come up with something new to blog about.

Write down 20 things to blog

Create a draft post of 20 things to blog about right now. Next time you’re stumped for a subject to blog about you can look back at your blog post idea list.

I hope I’ve been able to provide the answer to overcoming your blogger’s block.

Do you have any blog post ideas to add to my list? I’d love to hear about them in the comment section.

If you found this post helpful why not tweet it for me. Don’t forget to bookmark it or stumble it so you can refer to it the next time your muse goes into hiding.

If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

All great ideas. My biggest block is due to procrastination, though, from focusing on other things I enjoy just as much as blogging.

Search through people’s comments on your blog… and on other comments; and riff a new idea on that comment, attributing it and linking to that person’s blog. I do that often.

Ooohhhh, you missed one; write a blog post based on what someone else wrote on a blog you visited. Of course, then link back to them so your readers can see what the other person actually had to say. That also helps make new friends. :-)

Well I did say “link to something they’ve written on their blog and share your opinion.” That’s sort of the same thing though a pet peeve of mine lately has been that I see a number of bloggers copying other bloggers. One day one person will write on a subject & the next day someone else writes on that same subject. doesn’t really make for unique content when I visit three blogs & they’ve all written on the same topic.

A lot of times when I have a blockage I usually pull out some Draino and it works pretty well to clear the drain :)

One time when I couldn’t think of something to write about I wrote a post just like this one. Some of the things I do is I will go on google trends and check out some hot trends, I will visit my favorite blogs (like this one), or just look around the house for something to write about.

Seriously great list Rose! I know where I will be coming when I have a brain block.

    Thanks!

You could actually write down your exact feelings you’re feeling as you frustratedly sit there with writer’s block and then publish it. It would be mostly stream of consciousness, but that’s okay. :)

Goodness, you did say that; ugh! Although, if the take is somewhat different, I think it’s unique content. After all, how many cooking books are there, and different ways of making chili?

Nice interesting idea. However, when I stuck, I just move to any news site and try to read article related to my niche or something I’m interested in.

Hi Rose. Good ideas here. Some I haven’t seen written about before: debunk a myth, think outside the box. Those appeal to me. I will keep these in mind. I’m slowing down a bit with blogging. Find that when I push myself too hard, the blocks start to pile up.

Oddly, I don’t get writer’s block. I DO get times (like this week) where the amount of time available to write what I want to write coherently is less than the time I have available. E.g., THIS WEEK.

These are all great idea’s, I myself have trouble coming up with new posts and poems sometimes. Having written over 2200+ posts across 3 blogs in the past 15 months, I am just exhausted mentally from creating new content.

I often will find inspiration in news, conversations with other bloggers, or articles I read from twitter followers.

Twittley, BlogEngage, News.Google.Com are all good sources to find topics to write about.

I also encourage guest bloggers, because I like helping other bloggers get noticed as well. If you would like to be a guest blogger on dragonblogger.com let me know.
