Check Your Akismet Spam Folder Often

January 7th, 2010 by Rose DesRochers · 15 Comments

One of the best things about WordPress is their anti-spam program, Akismet.

Akismet is very efficient at catching comment spam, but every now and then a legitimate comments gets blocked. That’s why it is important to check the Akismet spam folder regularly.

I often forget to do this.

Today I checked my spam folder and bailed out Gordie, who Akismet mistakenly marked as spam.

To check your spam folder click on
dashboard … comments. Under the title “Edit Comments” you’ll see a linked titled “Spam.”

Click on “Spam” and you will be able to review comments sent to your spam folder.

For me Akismet has an overall accuracy rate of 99.783% and has caught 232,971 spam comments, so it is a very effective tool.

I do wonder though what other legitimate comments Akismet has marked as spam that I have missed.

How many spam comments has Akismet blocked for you?

If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

Akismet works well for me. I actually didn’t know I could go in and check to see the spam. Thanks for the tip with that cause you never know maybe someone that I know got spammed and is sitting in there right now all alone. Well maybe not all alone, but alone with the other spam. BTW do you like Spam.? You know Spam in a can. I don’t well I actually haven’t had it in a long time. There is something creepy about canned meat that never goes bad. Ok sorry kinda off topic.

Since May 2007, Akismet’s caught 55,592 spams, including 4,491 legitimate comments with a 99.193% rate.

Thanks for reminding me about the Akismet Stats panel, something I never look at.

I have a 98.943% accuracy with Akismet. 1417 spams caught! Wow! That’s like no comments in comparison to your number up there. ;) I sometimes peruse the spam and chuckle at the inane crap caught within. As far as SPAM in a can, I finally got rid of the last can when we moved to VA in 2002. For awhile there I swear it would just {poof} appear in the cabinet. Weird.

1,809 spams caught, 692 legitimate comments, and an overall accuracy rate of 99.600%. on exit78.

371,593 spam comments blocked on Daily Chronicles of the American Civil War… which is actually dormant — for now.

I didn’t know I could check it either! Thank you . Again. I’ve only had one but nice to know how to do this in the future. You are just a wealth of tidbits.

    Hi Rose,
Thanks for bailing me out. Which post was the comment for?

The first thing I do every morning is check the spam folder. Occasionally, there will be a legitimate comment in there. However, what I’m discovering is that most spam comments for my blog are in Russian. I don’t get it.

On the Times Union blog, it’s catching a lot of spam, mostly stuff in Russian (or at least using the Cyrillic alphabet). Or several like this:
Good Morning!!! blog.timesunion.com is one of the most outstanding informational websites of its kind. I enjoy reading it every day. blog.timesunion.com rocks!
I got 3 of those exactly like that recently.

They just reset a few months ago, and since then, 181 were caught as spam. One, though, just now was a legit comment from 12/24! Ouch.

    Hi Rose
I envy you your spam… guess it’s a sign that you are well known out there.
Akismet was the first plugin that I activated, probably because it comes bundled with wordpress and I had heard that it’s a must have plugin.
I notice that there is an upgrade for Akismet… will you be upgrading?

I’ll upgrade today, I’ve got a few plugins to upgrade.
Always get nervous when I upgrade plugins… fingers crossed!

BTW Can’t believe how fast your theme is.
When I hit submit comment… Bang! it’s on screen straight away.
Guess that’s the Cutline theme, always gets a good write up.
