Generate Traffic to your blog

January 1st, 2010 by Rose DesRochers · 40 Comments

Now a days everyone is writing on the subject of generating traffic to their blog. I’ve written on the subject of increasing traffic several times myself. But what works and what doesn’t?

In order to attract a readership to your blog you need to blog often. You don’t need blog every day, but you should make it a habit to update your blog on a regular bases.

StumbleUpon is one of the leading sharing sites on the internet. This blog receives 231 visits a month via StumbleUpon.

Twitter is another useful way of driving traffic to your blog. I receive 78 visits a month via Twitter.

  • Sign up at Twitter.
  • Network with other users.
  • Retweet their posts.
  • Engage in conversation.
  • Tweet some of your posts.
  • Add a Tweet this button to your blog.

Submit your blog to a well known blog directory. I receive 21 visits a month from Blogging Fusion Blog Directory. I have received 5035 visits from Blogging fusion since I was first listed in Feb of 2007.

Join a blogging forum or blogging network: I have receive 51 visits in one months time from blogengage. Just don’t join though and not participate. You can make blogging forums and networks work for you by participating and networking with other users. I received 21 visits last month from Blogger Talk Blog Forum (bloggertalk.net).

Become an active participant at a Google group. I’m an Official Blog Star at Blogger Help Group. I received 18 visits from the forum in one months time. I have to admit that number was much higher when I was more active in the forum.

Provide valuable content that other bloggers will want to link to and comment on other blogs. It has been proven that commenting on other blogs could increase traffic to your blog.

My top blogger referrers:

wassupblog.com (52)
rogerowengreen.blogspot.com (32)
thedietdiary.com/blog (30)
cutcaster.blogspot.com(23)
janniefunster.com (10)
wchingya.com (9)
rentschler.wordpress.com (8)

( Thank you for the traffic your blog brings me. I hope by linking to you that I can repay the favor.)

Interact with those who comment on your blog. (I receive a great deal of direct traffic to this blog as a result.)

Be fortunate enough to get a link from Darren Rowse. (33 visits a month. Not bad!)

Focus on keywords: Most of my traffic comes via Google. I receive 8,991 visits a month via Google. Followed by 718 via Yahoo, 510 via Bing and 119 via Aol.

technorati.com still brings some traffic. Not as much as it use to, but it doesn’t hurt to list your blog.

Set up an email subscription to your blog with Feedburner. I receive 30 visits a month via Feedburner.

Make it easy for visitors to subscribe to your blog. I have 64 Google Subscribers. (Do you subscribe to my blog?)

Make use of Google Analytics like I have. View your traffic sources and see what has been working for your blog.

Remember that a successful blog doesn’t happen overnight and what works for one person may not necessary work for another.

Do you have any tips on increasing traffic to your blog? What works for you?

If someone takes the time to comment on my blog, I always try to return the favor by commenting on their blog. Except when I get lazy :)

I still feel as if I am just getting started. I find that the best way for me to generate traffic has been to interact and just let people know that I have a blog.

I do get a lot of direct traffic and Google traffic as well. Overall, my blog is growing slowly but surely a little at a time.

I’ve found that finding a good forum (key word being GOOD) to be active in is a great way to drive traffic. I can’t figure out StumbleUpon though. When I Stumble something I get a small handful of hits but when my wife stumbles something for me it can lead to hundreds of visits. ????

I used to blog about traffic but it seem that the subject is underrated even though traffic is an important factor in the success of your blog. Some how, bloggers doesn’t seem to think that getting more traffic is healthy for their blog.

@Rose DesRochers: Yes, she definitely is. She does social media marketing part time, so her stumble upon account is 1200 times more active than mine. I figured that had to have something to do with it. Is it because of the number of followers, stumbles, both or something else?

I think you have touched on so many good points. What seems to stand out for me is that you have a community engagement theme running all through the post. Not many blogger get that, and it seems that you have.

    Hi Rose
Always interested in articles about generating traffic to my blog.
Notice that you are well up on the Social Networking side of things – Stumble upon and Twitter.
I really must make a start with Social Nerworking.

“Blogging Fusion Blog Directory” sounds interesting – what listing type would you recommend?

    BTW Great header graphic.

Keith, I’d recommend the feature listing as not only do you get rotated on the front page, but you get listed in the feature listing section, and top placement in category of your choice. You also get to choose 4 other categories to be listed in.

Wow! lots and lots of comments…

The “Subscribe to comments” plugin is a fantastic way of keeping the conversation going but it strikes me that the best way to generate traffic is to write a blog article called :
“How to generate traffic to your blog” LOL

The CommentLuv plugin is also a great tool.

Looks like you’ve found the right combination of plugins and title Rose.

Hi Rose. I want to let you know that before a couple of days ago I had never heard of you or your blog, but Googled how to fix something on my brand new blog. It worked thank you very much. I hung around a bit and really like what you have here. I just started a blog. And by just started I mean I literally have less than ten posts. I am almost pc illiterate and managed to start a blog, do some minor coding, and keep it running….so far that is. And with thanks to you. I will definitely be back! :) Happy New Year!

I’m proud I have contributed. You’re getting a great deal more traffic than I am – and by the way thank you for the referring me. I will consider some of these recommendations to aid me and improve my readership. I’ve changed to a new blog and it doesn’t seem to draw the way my old ones did. Again, happy to help because you are always newsworthy, fun, interesting and thought-provoking.
