“An estimated 121 million people world-wide currently suffer from depression.”
Reach out and help those in need!
Yesterday was the third national ” To Write Love on her arms day.” Did you write love on your arm? My son did and he wants me to tell you all about it.

“To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.”
TWLOHA’s vision includes statements like:
- “You were created to love and be loved.”
- “You need to know that your life matters.”
- “We know that the first step to recovery is the hardest to take. We want to say here that it’s worth it, that your life is worth fighting for, that it’s possible to change.”
Jamie Tworkowski is the founder of “To Write Love on Her Arms.” He started the movement in 2006 as a way to help his friend Renee. ” Jamie started selling t-shirts as a way to pay for Renee’s treatment. To Write Love in Her arms” has now grown to be a global movement that has helped many people.
You can read more about the story that started it all at “To write love on her arms.”
“TWLOHA supporters on SocialVibe have raised over $60,000 for online crisis and suicide prevention services.”

“Love is the Movement”, “Rescue is Possible” and “Stop the Bleeding” are slogans often used by TWLOHA.
The above photo is a picture of my son sporting his “love is the movement shirt” that he picked up a recent Christian conference in Toronto where he first heard about ” To write Love on Her Arms.”
Some disturbing factors about our youth
- “In Canada, suicide is the second highest cause of death for youth aged 10-24.”
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens in the US.
- “Each year, on average, 294 youths die from suicide.”
- “For every completed suicide there are an estimated 30 to 50 attempts.”
- “In the U.S., it’s estimated that one in every 200 girls between 13 and 19 years old, cut themselves regularly.”
- “47,000 Canadian deaths are linked to substance abuse annually.”
- “60% of illicit drug users in Canada are between the ages of 15 and 24.”
In my teen years I suffered from anorexia, depression, physical and emotional abuse, so this is a subject very close to my heart. As an adult I still battle depression.

Isn’t it amazing that with the onslaught of technology suicide is increasing when one would have thought it would be the other way around?
This is actually the first time I’ve heard of this movement. Perhaps it has yet to make it’s way Down Under.

Thank you for bringing this to everybody’s attention. I used to teach children who suffered from depression. I unfortunately had one of them succeed in his suicide attempt.
Keep spreading the word Rose.

What a great idea and movement.

It is good to see love as a form of suicide prevention. Many people indeed suffer, and having the reminder of love associated with the sadness reduces the sadness. Thanks for posting such a great article.
