How to add an image to your sidebar in WordPress

April 10th, 2009 by Rose DesRochers · 4 Comments

I realized today that I have a lot of “how to posts” on this blog regarding Blogger, but very little tutorials for Wordpress.

I was “twittering” last night and a fellow Twitter asked “how to add an image to her sidebar in Wordpress.”

Many Wordpress users use Widgets to customize their side bar. I don’t use widgets. Instead this is how I add an image to my sidebar.

I just create a dummy post and upload the image to it. Then I switch from visual to HTML mode and copy the path to my image.

wordpress sidebar

Next: Click on “Appearance.” Then click on “editor” and sidebar.

Copy the following code:

<a href=”Website you wish to link to” title=”Title of website”><img
src=”Link to graphic”  alt=”Title of image”/></a>

Replace website you wish to link to with the url of the site you’re linking to. Replace “Title of Website” with the title of the site you’re linking to. Change “Link to graphic” with the url path to the image you uploaded. Change the “Title of image” text to the title of your photo.

Scroll through the code and paste the above code where you want your image to appear.

If you are going to be adding a lot of images to your blog, you might want to add a <h2> Resources</h2> subheading tag just above your image code.

Once you have finished adding the code click on “update file.” Your image should now be showing in your sidebar.

Tip: Keep the image rather small, so it doesn’t overlap your sidebar.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful. I will be posting “WordPress” tutorials from time to time, but in no way do I consider myself a “Wordpress” expert.

I do highly recommend “Lorelle Vanfossen” if you are interested in WordPress blogging.

Rose, I scanned your archive and found tons of useful stuff on blogging.

What struck me is the simplicity of your writing that makes even a layman understand everything easily. Your feed in my reader now :)

I read this a couple of times and it is still like greek to me. I would love to add some Angel pictures but I just can not get this one for some strange reason. If I do a fake post and upload the image then I just copy the code from there. If that is the case it is really easy and I know how to do that. Maybe I will try this and see. I will let you know.

    Love and Blessings,
    AngelBaby
