Do You Follow Good Blogging Etiquette?
Bloggers love comments. Comments tell us that our readership is actually interested in what we blog about. If you like someone’s blog, you leave a comment. It’s that simple.
Let’s face it, comments are essential to every blog.
When someone takes time to visit my blog and leave a comment, I feel that it is common courtesy to return the blog visit.
Lately, I have visited a great number of blogs and have noticed a sad trend. A large number of bloggers do not response by a return visit and comment to my blog. Some bloggers don’t even acknowledge that I have commented on their blog at all.
Some Blogging Etiquette Suggestions.
Don’t email a blogger to say you love their blog instead of commenting.
If someone takes time to visit your blog, please return the visit.
If someone comments on your blog, acknowledge the comment. When you respond to a readers comments you show the reader that you value their visit. If you get a lot of comments you may not be able to reply to every comment, but you could acknowledge all comments by posting one reply to everyone.
Darren Rowse of Problogger even recommends responding to comments in his “31 Days to Building a Better Blog Project.”
If you’ve been regularly reading someone’s blog and lurking I encourage you to post a reply. It really does let the blogger know that you are interested in what they have to say.
Do you like it when people comment on your blog? Do you return visits? Do you acknowledge those who comment on your blog with a response?

I think that something else is impacting blog commenting — social media like Facebook and Twitter.
One blogger I read actually closed comments on his blog with a message to give him feedback on Twitter, so I signed up on Twitter. I had been resisting it, but decided to give it a go.
I’m back to resisting it again. I don’t like it. It seemed like it could become a social media black hole sucking up time that could be used for every thing more constructive — like visiting other blogs and posting comment more than 140 characters in length on posts that are of interest.

I love receiving blog comments but they do seem few and far between. Your advice here is good. I am guilty of not always acknowledging those who do comment. That, I shall change.

Good points, Rose. Thanks for the reminders.
I’m on my way over to Ms. Pink right now!

Some other thoughts on this: some sites require you tio register to comment, and I have if I’m likely to return. Some have word verification, and some work better than others – if I have to work at it, never mind. Some open another window that take too long to open and I’ll bail.
So, it depends.

Good advice, I always return visit and comment if the person has left a comment on my blog.

Hi Rose,
I do try to return visits, and I do acknowledge comments, sometimes just one comment addressed to everyone.
Roger Greene, I understand what you are saying about word verification and when I first started my blog I disabled that feature. But after having received several spam comments I enabled it. It keeps the spam off of my blog. When you have limited internet time the last thing you want to do is sift through a bunch of spam.

I blogged about this last year. I stop reading some blogs because the owner doesn’t seem interested in what I had had to say. But I only comment when I have something — a compliment or criticism — to add.

Well said Rose. I do reply to each of my comments on my photo blog. And I reciprocate posting comments as well. Word verification is something I can understand why it is needed becasue of spam, but I just despise it!

I think comments ad to the topic, that is why I’m asking readers for their opinion. Thank you Joy-Mari for stopping by my blog.

Tammy, you are great at returning comments. Even when you haven’t blogged, you visit mine.

I do return visits, but there are times that it takes longer than usual, especially if I have less time to go online. But I don’t forget and would certainly visit my commenter’s blog some other time.
BTW, thanks for visiting my site.

I love this post!! This is something I’ve been trying to tell my friends and family who “stalk” my blog but never leave comments! It’s so frustrating and I don’t know if what I’m blogging is interesting enough, if they even care what I’m saying or what! I’d love any feedback! Thanks so much for all the info!
