Google Analytics is one of the best tools that you can use to track information about the way visitors come to your blog. Recently I talked about Google Analytics in my post about weird search terms. A reader of my blog asked me ‘How to add Google Analytics to her Blogger Blog’. In this tutorial I will show you how to add ‘Google Analytics’ code to your Blogger blog.
Go to http://www.google.com/analytics/
Sign into Google Analytics with your Google Account.
Once you have signed in you will be taken to a page that asks you to “Click on the Sign Up button to get started.”

Click on the ‘Signup’ button to be taken to the ‘Signup’ page.

Next: Enter the URL of the site you wish to track, and assign a name as it should appear in your Google Analytics reports.

Once you have done this and clicked on continue, you will be taken to a page that asks for your First name, last name, home phone and Country. Fill out the details and click continue.
Next you will be taken to the Terms of Service Page. Put a check mark in the “Yes, I agree to the above terms and conditions” box and click on the button that says “create new account.”
Once you have created your account you will be taken to the tracking instructions page.
Copy the HTML ’snippet’ of Code.
- Sign into Blogger
- Click on the Layout Tab
- Click on Edit HTML
Put a check mark in the box next to ‘Expand Widget Template’.
It’s always a good idea to back up your template before you make any changes.
Click on Download Full Template to back up your template and save a copy onto your computer.

- Scroll down through the template code and paste the tracking code just before the body tag. <body>
- Click on Save Template at the bottom of the screen.
Once you have added the tracking code to your ‘Blogger Template’ go back to Google Analtics and click on continue.
That’s it. You have successfully installed Google Analtics on your Blogger Blog. Google Analtics should be now gathering data about your blog visits.
Please note that Google Analytics generally updates your reports every 24 hours. You may want to check back the next day to familiarize yourself with the different reports.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Thats pretty straight forward least til ya get to the reference to “body tag”, aint got a clue what that might look like. The illustration you offer is pretty small I can’t read it to identify just exactly what I should be looking at? Guess to how does the Google Analytics compare say to Sitemeter, which is what I’m using right now at least?

Good subject Rose.
Many newer bloggers (and some of the older hands) are not familiar with many of the tools that can help them in blogging. Tools like Goggle Analytics can provide an insight into who visits your blog, how they got there, and how long they stay.
I think it is important that one not over analyze their personal blog, but they should become very familiar with what the primary statistics can tell you about your visitors and how they react to your blog. Then you can quickly check to see how your blog is progressing and see indications of how your strategies for creating more quality traffic are working out.

Gary, I have updated the post to show “YOU” what the
tag is.This isn’t a comparison post between Analytics compare say to Sitemeter, however if you would like me to do a Sitemeter Vs. Google Analytics post I would be more than happy to.
It really doesn’t hurt to use both on your blog.

Thanks for the reminder; I just signed up. On another note, I’m having problems getting my gravatar to work. Sigh.

first ya see it then ya don’t—this A.M. went to compare my analytics chart with your blog post and found I had zero data (yesterday I had data, today I don’t) Anyway I cancelled my analytics account and RE-INSTALLED IT—course now I am in that 24hr waiting period—maybe tomorrow (In any case I saved a copy of my original Template layout—-to fall back on if necessary—-tomorrow will tell the tale—-and I WILL continue to post, as the mood strikes me to do so—but suspect I will slow down some, as I strain to find decent crap to blog about—-

I’ve done this but can’t see any visible counter on my Blogger page, is there meant to be a visible counter/box like most? Thanks!
