It’s July 1st and Canada is 141 years old. To all my Canadian readers, Happy Canada Day. On Canada Day, July 1, 1980, ‘O Canada’ was proclaimed the National Anthem of Canada. Today many Canadians will proudly sing ‘O Canada’ as we reflect on what it means to be Canadian.
Today, hubby, my son and I will be enjoying some of the Canada Day festivals. In the evening we are headed to a friends for a BBQ and to watch the fireworks. Sadly my daughter has to work.

I hope all those celebrating today have a fun and safe Canada day.
Now for some Canada Day Trivia
What is the origin of the name “Canada?”

Have no Idea how the country got called Canada, —it has been called Canada all my life (I’m 71)—-I think it was called Canada even before my Father was born (That was 1905)—I think I read once that the name Canada, came from a derivative of the Eskimo word Kanuckadda, loosely translated to mean, “Snow that covers everything and hides the seals”—but over time got shortened to just plain
“Canada” (hey just kidding ya—was named by a “viking , Eric the Red”, in honor of his small fishing village Back in Greenland, or Iceland or someplace like that)—(sorry funning ya some more). I have no real knowlege of how Canada got its name.

Happy Canada Day Rose, without googling, doesn’t Canada mean the village, a Native term?

well, I don’t know the answer to that question, other than that ‘vintage’ commercial where the guy says it means village. lol … don’t you love those commercials? I took a Canadian Studies course at university and we did an entire segment on them all … when you watch them all together like that it’s kinda funny. “I smell burnt toast!”

I think it may be from Ada Willows, a pioneering woman that settled the territory way back when. She was fond of asking if she can do things, hence, Canada.
I really have no clue, but hope you had a great day!

Thanks everyone. ……… Canada is derived from the word “kanata” which means “village.”
