Why does my blog suddenly have popups
March 11th, 2008 by Rose DesRochers · 24 Comments
Kill the popups and no I’m not talking about the online game. This is something that many of you may not be aware of. Recently in the blogger help group I have seen a few bloggers complaining about pop-ups on their blog. Each of these blogs installed code from rankwidget.com.
Once they removed the code the popups went away. This isn’t surprising. Rankwidget has hidden code for advertising that allows them to run popup ads on your blog. If you are looking to paste the rankwidget code into your blog, you might want to give it a second thought.

I wonder who thought that annoying pop-up ads would be a great idea and that the internet community would enjoy them? I almost always refuse to go back to a site with a pop-up window.

When did you find that it was rankwidget dot com? I am not sure if this is the only widget causing problems, have you heard of any others?

On of the most insidious kinds of “bots” that can be installed– illegally– on a site by a hacker are pop ups. The pop-ups can then do malicious things in a bot-net with the user IP.

Hi dear, you are absolutely correct. I had installed page rank widget on my blog. Now, I have removed it and to my surprise, it has really helped me in getting rid of those unwanted popups.
Thanks again for your great advice !

Kei, I went to your blog and viewed it in both Firefox & IE. No popups were loading?

Oh yeah! I removed the visitors online status flash widget from widgeo/compteur.cc just now. It works then! Thanks for the quick reply and pointing it out, Rose!

I’m suddenly getting popups in my blog and don’t know why. Surely there must be some kind of app that can scan a blog to show what’s causing the popups.

I don’t experience popups but others who visit my blogger blog do. Not just popups but they say their computers get hijacked and crash. I’m oblivious to all of these problems. I’ve had my code checked and rechecked several times. I’ve taken off most of my javascript widgets, one being FEEDJIT which McAfee SiteAdvisor showed that there were problems with adware, spyware etc. So if you have FEEDJIT installed you might want to take it down. Just my opinion. But even after removing it from my blog, visitors are still complaining about my site hijacking their computers.
