Semi Formal-Ugly Dresses

February 10th, 2008 by Rose DesRochers · 7 Comments

My daughter is attending a semi-formal next week and the other day we went dress shopping. She has not bought her dress yet, but boy did we see some ugly dresses on our shopping rounds.

Before we went to Sears, we checked out Value Village. Value Village offers designer clothing and new, gently used vintage clothing.

Some of the dresses at Value Village were so ugly that I wondered what poor bridesmaids was forced to wear them. It got me thinking though that ten years from now someone might be looking at the dress that she wears to her semi-formal and thinking boy is that ugly.

Heck, looking back now the dress my sister-law wore 19 years ago to my wedding might be considered an ugly dress.

Heck my wedding dress is so out of date that some might consider it an ugly dress. I on the other hand still think it’s beautiful.

When I got home, I Googled ugly dresses and to my surprise there is actually a website where people submit ugly wedding and bridesmaid dresses. (uglydress.com) There is even a section for ugly shoes and ugly tuxedos.

Wow, some of these dresses are uglier than the ones we saw at Value Village. Then again someone out there may actually love the dresses featured on that site.

Funny that it all comes down to ones design taste. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder isn’t it?

So ladies, do you have an ugly dress hanging in your closet? Who knows, your ugly dress may look beautiful on someone else.

Styles change and so do we.

If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

It is unfortunate that so much time and attention is given to these special dresses only to be stored away and rarely, if ever, worn again. “Space hogs” my girls call them!

The joys of being a bloke. Suit, tie, shoes. With the exception of being a bit “flarey” many years ago, for the most part they havent changed, and probably wont for quite some time.

I feel for women though! A night out turns in to a living nightmare of what to wear. I just go to the tux shop, get a suit and the rest is history!

Although I do look a touch “dorky” in a suit…

I bet your daughter, however, found the perfect dress. I miss dressing up occasionally, it was fun to shop for them. I have to run look at the “ugly” dresses. When I got married we rented everything, bridesmaids dresses and my bridal gown, so we didn’t have future ugly dresses, just “photos”, grin.

“She still has not boughten her dress.” Boughten? Is that one of those terms that they use in Canada that they don’t use in the US? I’m interested because I’ve been reading separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/ the separated by a common language blog, mostly comparing UK and US English, but occasionally Canadian or South African or Australian will creep in.

    Roger- You again!

Boughten is in the American dictionary, but having looked over my post I think it sounds better as bought.

boughten- Past participle of buy. Found regionally in the US and other English-speaking communities. Used both as an adjective and verb.

Does this answer your question? It looks like it is just as much an American thing as Canadian.

Seamus, what a great name for them. I only have one space hog in my closest. ( My wedding dress) lol I don’t mind it taking up space though!

Sy oh is that not the truth. My son graduates from elementary school in a few months. All he needs is shoes, a shirt, tie and shoes. I’m looking at 100.00. Cheaper then the dress, hair, makeup, shoes etc my daughter needed her grade 8 grad. lol

    Marcia lol. She hasn’t yet.

Oh my goodness, dress shopping with mom, now thats a great time. My grad dress was a horrible dynasty styled big shouldered monstrosity. I’d have saved it except the moment I got a chance I ruined it with orange soda. Guess that subversive streak has long roots.
I sure hope your daughter finds something fabulous, stylish and worthy to take up room in the closet. Fabric memories, space wasters extrodinaire but oh so sentimental.
