Jason Harris- Managing Director of Princeton Premier sent me an email today. It seems that I’m being considered for inclusion into the 2008-2009 Princeton Premier Business Leaders and Professionals “Honors Edition” section of the registry.
According to the email “The 2008-2009 edition of the Princeton Premier Registry will include biographies of the world’s most accomplished individuals.” Wait! They want to include me?
Something smelled a little spammy here so I Googled Princeton Premier and what would you know several individuals received the same email.
What made me so special? Not a darn thing!
Don’t you just love the smell of spam? I wonder how many unsuspecting victims will complete the application form and return it to Princeton Premier within five business days to be be listed among other accomplished individuals in the Princeton Premier Registry.
Comments on this post are now closed. But, don’t worry! You can leave feedback on Princeton Premier- Still Spamming.

Rose,
Not just spammy – but costly. A friend of mine proceeded – and after submitting her info etc – she was politely asked to please pay x-Dollars to be included and receive a free trip.

I find it mildly amusing that there could be so many people who are willing to criticize an organazation without knowing a thing about them . I am a member of the Princeton Premier and have been for over a year . Not only did the company pay for the airfare for my last vacation , I’ve met several professionals that I would not have made contact with if not for my invovlement with the Princeton Premier. I urge you to look beyond what you think and call the company to find out more before you blast them on the web as a scam. Their customer service is fantastic and they will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.

My spam-related suspicions were confirmed by Googling, as seems to be the case with most of these comments. But am I overreacting in thinking that it’s just a bit scary how easily these folks can personally address these messages? It makes it so much more credible it it’s topped with your actual name. How do they do it?

Then, I realized that although I am a bit accomplished, and slightly distinguished, that I still didn’t rank among the top business execs in the world. Thank you, your blog helped to expose a potentially costly left click.

Well I have been noted for a thing or two, and one thing you can be sure of: if an “Important Person’s Registry” wants YOU to pay for the privilege of being on their list, it’s not legit.
Think about it, to be a useful resource for ‘Notables’ a Registry has to have all of ‘em, not just those that are willing to pay for the privilege.
Frankly, in the USA, the only one that means anything is Marquis Who’s Who. You can’t buy your way in, and they’ve been doing this since 1899, a lot longer than Spam has existed.
Oh, and you don’t have to pay anything to be included, just measure up to their required standards.
No, I don’t work for them, and yes, I do measure up (I’m in 5 of their Indexes, let’s just say I’ve had an interesting and varied career)

Yale Executive Council registry
Brown head honcho registry
Columbia Leaders league
Cornell Big shot club
Dartmouth who’s who list
I’m been fooled before by others but not this time. This time its special its

Hey look, it’s a club for fellow honorees.
Wrote: Jul 16, 2008 at 4:10 pm
What a bunch of cynics… you all are not going to take away this prestigious honor away from me!!! This is “Princeton” for God’s sake! Can’t you all see what a great accomplishment this is… all my years of blogging have paid off! I have made it to the Big Time, Big Time Fool that is!
Yes, I was foolish enough to feel slightly special, fill out the application, even got a call from one of their executives, who unloaded a canned speech about how illustrious I must be… He asked several questions about my title, where I went to school, why I started my organization, and my plans for future growth… I was buying it all hook line an sinker due to my over-inflated ego and having worked hard for years to get my name out there with my writings.
Then this prolific speaker got to the membership dues…. A red light went off in my head, and I promptly told him I left my credit cards at home, and could he call back at a later time? He said, “No, Sir, our organization has a policy where we can’t come back to applicants.”
I replied, you’re telling me you have spent all this time going over all my accomplishments, deciding whether to accept me or not, and you can’t call me back at another time when I have my credit cards, knowing all along my wallet was in my back pocket. I smelled a scam, and after declining his offer I found this site after googling it.
Good work, Rose!
At the very least, we can all be slightly reassured that we got noticed because we have been doing something with our lives. I am fairly assured they didn’t get your name for being the homeless bum holding a “Will Work For Food Sign” on the street corner. Yes, I would say that after looking at these comments, we represent people who have jobs and pay our bills. Let’s start a club, and Rose can be President!
I feel like a chump!

Hi there,
Like everyone else on here I got the email as well. I have to say that I was rather surprised to get it while being out in the workforce for only a year. I mean honestly, what have I done that is SO special?
I googled around for a bit trying to look into it and found this blog. I suppose it’s a bit disappointing but meh, if something is too good to be true, it likely isn’t. Right?
Wrote: Aug 2, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I just got my email today. It seems pretty much like the Who’s Who email I received some time ago.
Evidently there is more than just one company doing it. When I read the email & they wanted all of this information from me, I felt that it didn’t seem right. Earlier today I received an email saying that I’ve been invited to submit some of my photography to the Terry O’neil awards & provide them with all types of personal information. The problem (for them) lies in the website that they were referring me to. Evidently to participate you must live or work in the U.K. or Ireland. I live in the U.S. I don’t think I can participate. I politely informed them of that & have yet to hear back from them.
Wrote: Aug 20, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Like Jonathan, I actually believed that somehow through my accomplishments someone recognized me… I too filled out the application and received the “canned speech” phone call.
When I asked “Why” I was being given this special honor, the “canned speech” spoke person told me it was a review by the membership committee and she didn’t have access to their research methods.
Then came the choices of “Platinum, Gold, and other membership” offers. When I told her I wanted more time to research, first asking her for their web site, I was told that their web site was for “members only” and that I was insulting them by questioning their motives!
Hummmmmm thanks Rose, this blog was an eye opener and I’m glad I wasn’t alone in my audacity to question their motives.

Anyway, I noticed the generic looking title and ripped off logo on the Premier application, did a quick Google search, and, yes, your site comes up on top. I really enjoyed reading your blog. It’s a 10. Maybe you should be recognized somehow as one of the world’s most accomplished people.

Rose – on behalf of the 320,000 employees of the General Electic Company, I thank you. We just started getting our invitations to Princeton Premier this week (lapse in the firewall perhaps). You’ve become the clearinghouse for information on the subject and maybe the Princeton Review folks have no love lost for you these days.
Am commenting to keep your rankings high and to add an interesting tidbit….if you look for the Princeton Premier address on Google Maps you can call up a street level view. Seems they have a couple of issues to deal with besides your blog – like grafitti, lax trash pick-up, and a proliferation of 1970’s GM automobiles. The link is: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=23-35+Steinway+Street,+Astoria,+NY+11105&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=title
I had to conclude that the business of identifying successful individuals is not good enough for a prime location or to get one listed in the Princeton Premier list….or maybe it is.

It was an honor to find out that I was one of the hundreds of thousands to be selected for this opportunity to be included with so many accomplished professionals. Oh, be still, my heart.
However, it was my company’s spam service that latched on to the invitation before I could. So it was suspect from the git-go.
I’m a little disturbed by one thing though. They used my full name in the subject line. I’m usually very careful about who gets my full name and email address. Has anyone investigated from whom they receive their lists of lucky winners?
Rose, you rock! Love the momentary glimpse into your world!

Princeton Premier Registry…..”Inclusion is considered by many as the single highest mark of achievement.”
I am so touched I cannot comprehend what this inlcusion would mean to me, my family and my fellow accomplished executives and professionals.
Coffee for all!

I can’t believe I read through ALL of this. But I did. I chuckled. I too, along with EVERYONE else, smelt spam and I remember from when I was a kid – I hated it then (tastes awful!) and I hate it now. Thank you spam filter, thank you Rose, thank you everyone!
I wonder what my flag will be? I am a Brit abroad. Oh, by the way, the Aussies are getting the same emails over there and have similar discussions!
One last thing, Rose, what are your biggest accomplishments so far? I am curious! I too am a write and poet (published) and professional storyteller!

Hey all,
I came so close to purchasing a membership. Then the catch: How much? Oh, well, that’s not much. Wait… You mean $7.95, right?… No? I can buy Platinum at $800 which includes the free airline tickets, or Gold at $600? Wow. Yes, of course it would be a great honor. Yes, of course I understand you need my answer right now. Well…. well…. not really, see. Oh, you can give me the airline tickets even if I do the Gold? That’s great… but still… Oh, wow, a $200 offer reserved for your non-profit candidates. That’s very generous. I just remembered something else want to spend $200 on, though. What? … You said what? You can list me for free, but it will just be my name, not my whole biography, and it will only be for a year… Well, as I think it over, that sounds best. Thank you.
I’m glad this page exists to reassure me in my decision not to move forward. Thanks Rose and everyone else.

Looks to me like they have got fed up with America and Canada and started on us Brits. Received same email in London today.
I have received awards for my work so for a second I thought it might be real then I realised it was a load of old rubbish and googled to see if there was anything there. Hello fellow ex-Princeton Premier people!
I have hit the spam button on my office laptop and shall not be hearing from them again!

I got mine as well and checked out their supposed website. My suspicions were confirmed.
Jeeez, and my mother would have been SO proud.

This is like Mensa IMHO. I took their test at school and remarkably; I had a “High” IQ! So I was eligible to join , I just had to stump up the yearly fee.
Wait a minute. Why would I pay a yearly fee to bolster my own ego? That doesn’t sound very “clever”.
Got my Princeton email this morning and like others above I googled them, ending up here. It’s heart-warming to know that this world is so overpopulated that people can make such a good living off the ignorant.
And on that note; Merry Christmas everyone!
