Blog Optimization- Optimizing your Blog for the Search Engines

November 19th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 10 Comments

I get a lot of Search engine traffic to my blog, so I thought I would pass on some tips to help you optimize your blog. Blogs are naturally search engine friendly and optimizing your blog for search engines is really no different than optimizing your website.

Here are some suggestions to get you started.

  • Back Links: Backlinks play a very big role in Google’s pagerank algorithm. Backlinks are extremely important to your blog’s rankings, so make sure you have a large number of backlinks.
  • Make use of the alt description tag: Spider bots cannot read images, so when adding images to your blog it’s important to place information within the alt and anchor text of pictures.
  • Make good use of anchor text: Don’t use “click here” or other non-descriptive link text. Always use keywords as your anchor text. Google loves anchor text.
  • Google Sitemaps: Add a Google Sitemap.
  • Categories: Make sure you use keywords in your categories.
  • Add Social Networking links: Make it easy for your visitors to share your blog post on social networking sites like Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon.
  • Link to Related posts: If you’re writing on a topic you’ve previously written about then link to that post. If you’re using Wordpress you can install the related post plugin.
  • Add Tags: Add Technorati tags to your posts.
  • Choose your post titles carefully: Consider keywords when writing your blog post titles.
  • Ping: Ping services like pingoat.com
  • Update frequently: Remember that content is king. Search engines love content. The more often you update then the more often Google and other search engines will send their crawlers to crawl your blog.

These are just a few suggestions. If you follow these tips, you”ll increase your blog’s visibility in the search engines.

I also wanted to plug this  tutorial. One of the best tutorials out there on search engine optimization for blogs is called “Do it Yourself Search Engine Optimization” by Lorelle VanFossen.  Lorelle offers tips, tools and techniques you need to  create a search engine friendly blog. Be sure to check out the tutorial.

Hey, Rose, thanks again for the support. Has your blogs been hit by the drop in PageRank? I know there is a lot of screaming and yelling about changes and new things going on with Google, blog ranking, and ads – which may change some of our beliefs in how SEO works. I’m keeping my ear to the ground.

    Hi,
Thanks for providing so much information! I just don’t know how to put a backlink, or a lot of these things on my page. I would if I did, just don’t know how. But, I am going to print this out and see what I can come up with. Thanks again for being so helpful, it is appreciated! :)

    Great post!
I have a question for you: is technorati so important for our blog ranking? I ask this because my posts never appear in technorati, I’m tired of using the ping button but nothing appears.

Lorelle, I don’t have any advertisement at this time on my blog so I did not see a drop in PR.

Bob Backlinks or “back links” are links from other websites to your blog.

Cindy- if you ask at Bloggertalk I would be happy to answer any of your questions.

    Thanks Viola.

    Collinsom thank you.

Gusti well there has been a lot of debate on that in the blogosphere. I think Technorati can bring you some traffic and I don’t think it hurts to ping them sometimes.

Good tips Rose as always! There’s also the all in one SEO pack you can download from SEO Tools, although I have not yet done this one myself..

Good points about the Technorati tags, also where do you get the Digg widgets from may I ask?

    Best wishes, Mark.
