I had no idea it was considered rude or bad form. I do it simply because it annoys the heck out of me when I go to a site and then the back button doesn't work because the site owner has it set up to reroute to the same page if you try to use the back button.

I don't know what that's called, but it really torks me off. Because then, I have to start all over. I can't just click an "x" at the top of the screen and close a box.

If I don't know the URL of where I was, I have to close my browser and run the same search I did before to find the site I was on. I think this is a lot more inconvenient than what I'm doing by having my links open in a new window. I totally agree with Noddegamra.

It never occured to me that someone might think I was trying to keep them on my site. On the contrary, I don't want them to lose the trail back to the site that linked to me in the first place.

Interesting post!Like you said, people will get back to your site if it's good but there isn't a 100% chance..Why take chances? So,while i blog,i make it a point to add the target=_blank tag compulsorily.Till date,i have never had any of the links i use to open in the same window. It's a user's tendency to click on things and explore.ANd in that curiosity people may tend to forget your site's very existence and get carried away!
I won't ever hate sites that use a blank tag.I would love that! With tabs, the tag is a blessing!

I agree with Karen and ROG for exactly the same reasons.

I personally like visiting a site that uses _blank, but I've never held it against anyone for NOT using it, yet.

PS you're mentioned on my blog today too - you hornets nest mixer upper!

In my opinion I think it takes control away from the user. It is like pushing your personal preferences on them. Also opening a new window breaks the back button.
