Full Vs Partial RSS Feeds

September 29th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 7 Comments

It in my decision on Rose DesRochers- World Outside my Window to use partial text on my RSS feed. It has been suggested on my post that I should switch to full feed.

Now don’t get me wrong; I’m all for full text feeds, but I don’t plan to switch my blog feed to full. You may be wondering why?

Well I would hope that the first few sentences of my post, would make you want to read the whole article and maybe even comment. If it doesn’t then I guess there is nothing I can do.

The biggest problem with full feeds is the ease for with which people can steal your content. One of my main reasons for choosing partial feeds is that too many people are already scraping my content. I don’t want to give these sploggers my full content.

While I appreciate your suggestions, I won’t be switching.

So call me an RSS tease or what you will- if you value my content then you are just going to have to come to my blog to see what I have to say.

If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

I guess I kind of prefer the partial feeds, too. Even for those that on my RSS reader who provide full feeds, if it’s something that interests me, I’ll usually go to their blog to read it there.

Of course, I don’t have any significant scraping of my content, yet. Maybe partial instead of full will help keep it that way.

    No.
    You are wrong.
    I am right.
I demand that you give me all your content in RSS.

Here is what I get in your partial feed for this post (I’m using Bloglines):

“It in my decision on Rose DesRochers- World Outside my Window to use partial text on my RSS feed. It has been suggested on my Delurk post that I should switch to full feed. Basically, there isn’t enough in the teaser to make me want to read you at all, and over half of it is a copyright notice and a solicitation to buy you a coffee for a post I haven’t yet had a chance to read. ;)

I use your feed only as a heads up that you have posts and come to your site to read them. It doesn’t really serve the purpose you state above–to provide a teaser. If you could set it to provide a bit more teaser text, that would probably work better.

While I would prefer the full feed, I can certainly respect your decision to stick with the partial feeds.

The reason I prefer the full feeds is because I find it takes me less time to keep current on all of the sites I follow to read the article in my RSS reader. Then when I find a post I like, I follow through to comment.

Hello Linda, thank you for the suggestions. I’ll see that hubby fixes it so the coffee part is not in my feeds. I’ll include a bit more in the opening teaser part. The copyright part will still be there.

The teaser is there, the coffee is gone, but the copyright msg. is also gone. It’s better, though!
