Today is the 25th birthday of the first :-). The Smiley-face
emoticon, was created in 1982 by Carnegie Mellon University Computer Science Research Professor Scott E. Fahlman.

“I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-),” wrote Prof Fahlman. “Read it sideways.”
“To mark the birthday, Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest for innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication. The Smiley Award, sponsored by Yahoo Inc.”
Many more emoticons have been created since that first smiley in 1982. What’s your favorite emoticon?
