Although the ability for the search engines to follow the nofollow tag is debatable, as of right now the search engines do not read javascript so the links would not pass pagerank.

Derek, I realize they have changed a few things including the way that you now claim blogs. Wonderful!

Now if they could only see that the link is not passing PageRank.

This is the type of thing that had prompted me to write my post about link bait on the part of BC back when I first signed up with them.

To their credit, they have changed some of the things that I complained about. I've still got my site listed there although I don't participate much in the discussions anymore.

It is still a tool in my toolbox but I don't rely on them for any juice.

oh oh, you hit a nerve with somebody, but it sounds to me you might know who they really are, very interesting post, I was of course not aware of this and quite frankly dissapointed with BC. But they are good for social networking cause that's how I found you and other great people.

Linda, thank you for pointing out that little error in my post. I have corrected it.

Tricking people into believing that they are gaining from a link is bad business ethnics in my opinion.

The directory in question is benefiting from an SEO prospective, but all those who submit to them are not.

We are not saying here in this post that Blog Catalog is not beneficial from a networking perspective. We have commented that it is not beneficial from an SEO perspective in that the links do not pass Page Rank.

The reason that many people submitted to Blog Catalog before it became a network was because it was a Page Rank seven directory and it is still listed as such.

Many still submit there because of that reason.

Ask anyone and they will tell you that one way to increase PR is to get backlinks from high PR sites. However in the Case of BlogCatalog it is questioned if the link is beneficial.

That is what the question of this topic is.

It is not whether BlogCatalog is beneficial as a social network.

I cover that in another post.

I won't argue with you that social networks have their place.

Thank you for commenting.
