Many people will say that marketing a blog doesn’t take a lot of work, but it does take a lot of work. With so many blogs being created each day it is never easy to make your blog stand out amongst the crowd. You have to work at it.
I have written many articles on marketing a blog and some of these tips will sound like repetition, but they are certainly worth repeating.
- Research keywords using WordTracker and the top tags at Technorati.
- Set your blog up to ping.
- Add your blog address to your email signature.
- If you post in forums and the administrator allows a signature, post your blog url in your signature.
- Make use of any platform where you can connect with other bloggers. Yahoo Groups, Google Group, Social networking sites and blogging forums are a great place to start.
- Optimize your blog. If you are using Wordpress, install plugins.
- Use Google Analytics to learn which keywords visitors are searching to come to your blog. Submit to Google Sitemaps.
- Submit your blog to blog directories.
- Submit your blog url to big directories like Blogging Fusion Bidding Directory.
- Request reviews of your blog and hold a contest for the best review.
- Comment on other blogs & always respond to comments on yours. Be an active commenter.
- Monitor your inbound links to your blog with Google Alerts, Google Blog Search and Technorati. Know who is linking to you. Thank them for the link love.
- Guest blog on other blogs.
- If you use Wordpress make use of the WordPress related entries plugin.
- Get listed in Technorati.
- Participate in Memes.
- Use popular keywords in the blog post title and the body of your post. If you use the more tag in Wordpress make sure your keywords are in the first half of your post.
- Become an exspert at something, anything. We all have a talent. Show the blogosphere yours.
- Blog about controversial topics in the news.
- Hold a contest.
- Pay for advertising. Purchase text advertising on a popular site or pay someone to review your blog.
- Submit to digg and reddit.
- Stumble some of your post at stumbleupon. Make it easy for others to stumble your post. Add a “Stumble this” button to your page.
- Focus on content. Content is what keeps your readers returning.
- Appreciate your readership. If you are using Wordpress install the top commenter plugin.
- Tag your posts.
Have I missed any tips? Why not add them to the comment section here.

Rose, can you explain what a meme is?

I’ll answer that in another post just because it deserves the attention.

Bob, thank you for the coffee. Certainly your StumbleUpon profile should be more than just a listing of your own pages. However I saw nothing in terms that stated you could not stumble your own posts from time to time.
Since I joined StumbleUpOn at the beginning of this year, I have spent a lot of time stumbling web pages. I have also received a lot of traffic from StumbleUpon.
I need to update my post to inform bloggers to make it easy for others to stumble their pages.

These are great tips. I am eager to give some of them a shot when I get a chance (homework is taking the front seat right now over blogging
) I have you on my reader so I enjoy many of your post’s daily, but it seems I am always reading on the go, so I haven’t been commenting much. You are definitely right that it is an important part of blogging.

This is a really useful blog entry. It will definately help me get started!
Today I opened my new blog. At the moment it is extremely “bare-bones”. I have a lot of plugins to research and upload. Hopefully I will learn enough from this blog to get a good foot on the ladder to success.
I aim to go through this list you have provided, but there is one thing I’m not sure on. What is meant by “Set your blog up to ping.”?
thanks in advance!

Matt, In your Wordpress dashboard go to “Options” then click “Writing” then scroll to the bottom and you will see a list of ping services.
My pleasure Crystal.
Sarah, I understand.
