Teens – Tattoos and Body Piercing

August 25th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 9 Comments

I know that tattoos and belly button piercing are two of the latest forms of self-expression among teens. However, this is one fashion statement that this mom is saying no way, uh-uh, not going to happen, forget it to.

My daughter wants a belly button ring and a tattoo. Let her go out and get a temporary tattoo because the real thing is so not happening. The only thing getting pierced on her is the ears. Two in each ear. Maybe a 3rd in the one ear. That is where I’m drawing the line. If that girl starts with piercing her belly button, before I know it she’ll look like Elaine Davidson.

No offense to Elaine! Elaine Davidson, holds the Guinness world record for being the woman with the greatest number of body piercings. Elaine Davidson has 720 piercings on various parts of her body, including 192 on her facial area alone.

Lol, you don’t want your daughter to have a full body tattoo and hundreds of piercings? :)

As someone with piercings and tattoos, I have a little bit different opinion on the idea of my children getting piercings or tattoos.

With tattoos, I won’t approve of them before the age of 18 but after that my kids are open to make that decision. Most tattoo shops will not even tattoo someone under the age of 18.

With regard to the piercings, I will approve of my children doing that if it is something they want. I’ve had my ears pierced for a long time and have thought of doing my eyebrow. Boys don’t typically get their belly-button so I don’t think I will have to cross that bridge.

Hopefully your daughter understands and respects your decision!

As someone with neither, I have had a very similar opinion on tattoos and piercings. Both of our daughters have similar views and neither has tattoos or piercings, though the oldest, who is in clothing retail has had to struggle with young ladies who work under her who don’t seem to understand that the corporate policy is that tattoos will not be exposed.

However, in recent years, I’ve learned to become more accepting of what others choose and find it easier to look beyond the hair color, piercings, and tattoos.

She’ll be 18 in 10 months. Hopefully by then she’ll have changed her mind.

Good luck! If she hasn’t changed her mind and is set on doing it, please just tell her to take her time and make sure it is something she really wants.

With the piercing, it isn’t so much a big deal as the hole will close up but with the tattoo you are making a permanent decision. Yes, you can get them removed or covered with another tattoo but this expensive and takes time.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. :)
My nineteen year old DD got her belly button pierced and I didn’t know for about 6 months, I wasn’t impressed but not a lot I could do. She wasn’t allowed her ears done until she was 12.

I have told myself that when the time comes (if the time comes… fingers crossed) that these decisions for the most part are permanent and since one day they will most likely marry and their future spouse will then have to look at it, they have to wait till then to decide to do anything permanent.

peircings are alright because you can take them out when you’re board but tattoos even if you get them lazered they’re still there. but some percings I don’t like, I hate lip peircings, above the lip and around the lip, and bellybutton peircings are all a bit cheap looking. I like odd ones that are’nt seen every were
