I wrote a simple tutorial on how to add a hit counter to your blog. This tutorial is for StatCounter the counter that I use on my blog , but there are a number of hit counter services that you can use.
How to Add a Counter to Your Blog
- Register an account at statcounter.com.
- Once registered you will then be asked to select your time zone.
- Next Proceed and add a project.
- On the following page you will be asked “What kind of StatCounter project do you need?”
- The ‘Advanced StatCounter Project’ and ‘E-Commerce StatCounter Project’ are both in development at the time of writing this tutorial.
- Choose the ‘Standard StatCounter Project’ and click on next.
- You will then be asked to fill out details about your blog.
- Once you have done so click the ‘Next’ button at the bottom of the page.
- Congratulations! Your project has now been created.
- Next you will need to add the counter to your blog.
- Click on ‘configure and install code.’
- On the next page you can choose from an visible counter, invisible counter, visible counter on homepage only or button only.
- Choose the one you prefer and hit next.
- For this tutorial I chose invisible counter.
- On the next page of the ‘installation options’ you can choose your platform of choice and stats counter will provide you with a set of instructions on how to install your code.
- Copy the code.
- Add the HTML code to your blog’s template.
- If you are using Blogger you will want to go to layout, template page elements/ html javascript and add the code there instead of in the footer of your template.
- In Wordpress copy and paste the code exactly as it is shown on the page into your theme footer.
- Make sure you insert it after the <body> tag and before the </body> tag.
That is all there is to installing a counter from StatCounter on your blog. Now you can start tracking your blog statistics.

I use statcounter. It is the GREATEST.
The free version only shows detailed information for you last 100 page views. (But, if you don’t have the money to spend it is still very worth it).

I used statcounter too years ago and it was excellent. Now I am using a combination of awstats (in the cPanel options) and Google Analytics.
I won’t go into details as how different these two make the statistics
Excellent tutorial. Easy to follow for all people who need the information. Some of us might think this is pretty simple, but with a tricky script, even a stats code can be a pain.

Hi Carl, I use a combination of counters. Server stats (cPanel options) show a lot more, but stats counter is a good counter to use too.
Dojo, I believe in keeping things simple. I too use Google Analytics and server stats.

Hi Rose. I tracked your site down when asking at Google Help about how to install a visit counter on my blog. Thanks for your clear and easy to follow instructions.
No, I won’t buy you a cup of coffee today, but if you journey over to my site I will take you for an airplane ride.
