Well it seems that a Google PageRank update is underway. The estimated day for the update was July 21st. I’m already sitting at a five and I don’t expect my Pagerank to change. Speaking of Google PageRank, I came across an excellent article by Smashing Magazine, about Google Pagerank. Be sure to read “Google PageRank: What Do We Know About It?“

Wow, I didn’t know that the page rank updates were underway. Thanks for the heads up! You’re smokin’ hot at a PR5
Congrats on that! Here’s to hoping you make it to 6 this time!

The thing about page rank is that it is far less important than it used to be. Page Rank was an effective way of ranking websites when it first hit the scene but before long it started to get abused. As with anything else algorithmic, people began to find ways to inflate their page rank and now Google and other engines that incorporate link popularity into their ranking formula have put much less emphasis on rank.
In day’s of old search engines used to rely on Meta keywords to determine rank. People eventually abused keywords by adding popular phrases and competitor’s names, now, keywords are all but obsolete. There is not a major search engines that uses keywords for ranking purposes.
My company is the top Internet Marketing firm in NJ and one of the top in the Nation. We manage over 400 websites including sites for Sara Lee, Scholastic, Conair, Kiwi, Endust and more. I watch the effects of page rank and its declining importance over the years. A huge mistake it to get hung up on it as you will lose site of what the sites goal is in the first place.
Don’t worry too much about page rank. Link to others because it makes sense for your visitors not to increase page rank. Sites that provide the most value to a visitor are sites search engines want in their indexes they are typically sites that provide great content which promotes other sites linking to you. Try connecting with customers and you’ll connect with Google.

I will just never, ever fully understand PR. I find myself reading about it more and more as the updates get closer, but my mind only muddies even more.

Gerri, estimation was Jul 21 and some were reporting one was underway, but there has not been an update yet. I estimate within the next two weeks, but we’ll see.
