Canadian officials are investigating what appears to be a batch of counterfeit toothpaste that was found in Toronto. June 20, 2007 my local newspaper reported that a survey of discount/dollar stores Tuesday did not turn up any of the counterfeit toothpaste, yet I was in ‘Dollar It’ tonight and there on the shelf was the counterfeit dangerous toothpaste manufactured in South Africa.

We told the store manager who said she would pull the counterfeit Colgate from her shelves. I’m going back in tomorrow to see if it is still there.

The toothpaste may contain diethylene glycol (DEG), an ingredient used in antifreeze and as a solvent. I’ll be calling Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch Inspectorate in the morning to let them know that I did see this product being sold at my local Dollar it.
