Last week I brought you 13 internet child safety statistics. This week I bring you 13 sickening internet pornography statistics involving children.

Statistics on child pornography are alarming.
- Daily Gnutella “child pornography” requests 116,000.
- The U.S. Customs Service estimates that there are more than 100,000 web sites offering child pornography – which is illegal worldwide. – (Red Herring Magazine, 1/18/02)
- 70% of convicted sex offenders use the internet.
- 76% of victims in net-initiated sexual exploitation cases were 13-15, 75% were girls. “Most cases progressed to sexual encounters” – 93% of the face-to-face meetings involved illegal sex (Journal of Adolescent Health, November 2004).
- Child pornography has become a $3 billion annual industry (Ropelato, Jerry. Top Ten Reviews. Top Ten Reviews, Inc. 5 Dec. 2005)
- The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children revealed, in a June 2005 study, that 40% of arrested child pornography possessors had both sexually victimized children and were in possession of child pornography (also known as “dual offenders”).
- Demand for pornographic images of babies and toddlers on the Internet is soaring (Prof. Max Taylor, Combating Paedophile Information Networks in Europe, March 2003).
- More than 20,000 images of child pornography are posted on the Internet every week (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 10/8/03).
- 140,000 child pornography images were posted to the Internet according to researchers who monitored the Internet over six weeks. Twenty children were estimated to have been abused for the first time and more than 1,000 images of each child created (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 10/8/03).
- The typical age of children found on pornography sites is between 6 and 12, but the profile is getting younger (Prof. Max Taylor, Combating Pedophile Information Networks in Europe, March 2003).
- Police estimate that over 500,000 distinct images of children being abused can be found on-line. (Kinsa.net)
- These images represent 20,000 different child victims. (Kinsa.net)
- Police have only identified 500 and rescued even fewer. (Kinsa.net)
It’s not enough to just read these statistics ; you have to watch the Ctva.ca four part episode titled “Save the Children.” A child’s innocence can never be replaced.

I admit, I skimmed this post. Quickly.
Coward! I just don’t have the stomach for this stuff — but I think it’s great that you have the courage to bring attention to this sick sick sick perversion. I’m replacing the bag of ignorance back over my head!

These are very chilling stats indeed. If I were more like my friend, I would have skip reading. It is scary.
Once again, this is an argument for buying myself an island, no internet and homeschooling my kids in nature!

TMI for me. I appreciate the sincere intent but I can’t deal with it. I’m glad my kids are old enough to be cautious on line.

Good information to have. Makes me glad that Little Princess is still computer free at the moment.

“70% of convicted sex offenders use the internet. ”
100% of them wear shoes. Coincidence?
“Daily Gnutella “child pornography” requests 116,000. ”
I’m suprised that’s not a higher number. But Yikes nonetheless
Those are some crazy statistics

Thanks for a wonderful list (of really bad things!) I have 3 kids (10, 6, & 4). My 10 year old is just now wanting to get on the net and it scares the bejesus out of me!

I chickened out. Read the intro only… My Wonder Woman just got through dealing with this (and your previous post’s topic) for a grad project. Just not going there again.
*sigh*
Good thing to cover, though, especially for folks who don’t have the heads up, yet.

Absolutely frightening statistics. My husband and I were discussing this last night after reading a post by Aussie Mom (one of her family doctors was arrested for child molestation). Our conclusion was that there have always been perverts, but it wasn’t widely discussed or reported in the news. The internet exponentially increases the potential for the perverts to do harm. As others have said, how do you stop it? And, how do you teach children “caution” without teaching them “distrust?”
Great post. Thanks for stopping by mine.

Hmmm…those are disturbing statistics.
I wonder why you’re getting so few comments?? (I saw your comment on the TT website) It’s not as if you posted images–it’s important to be aware of this.
Thanks,
Peg

Thanks for the statistics. I’m always amazed at the police officers and child welfare workers who have to wade through these horrific images in order to save the children (few and far between) and prosecute the criminals. I can’t imagine a worse job on then planet – nor one as important.

Yikes! I hate that kind of stuff. I don’t understand it, and I feel so sad for kids who are trapped into this.

Sickening, just sickening.
Makes you really reconsider having the internet in your home at all.

Those are some truly horrific stats. Hard to read, but certainly important to know about.
Have seen that special advertised – will have to tune in.
Thanks Rose

The absolute stat was the last one, why can’t we devote more money and technology to preventing this within our country? This should be a priority b/c reasoning goes, as the number of victims increase, these victims become the predators.
I tell parents that they should be checking up on their kids’ internet habits, if you’re paying for the internet access, than it is your responsibility to know what is going out and what is coming in.
Good topic!

As a very new mom with a 19 mos old at home – I get very scared when I read through stats like these. Like Virginia above, I wish things were VERY different in this world.
