Rose DesRochers Review of Twitter.com – A New Networking Addiction

March 17th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 4 Comments

Twitter is the talk of the internet. If you’re not familiar with Twitter, Twitter is a site that allows you to post one-line messages about what you’re currently doing—via the web interface, IM, or SMS.

I decided to give Twittera chance. I joined at the request of another webmaster who was not very pleased with my negative review of Twitter. C’est la vie.

Let me say from what I’ve seen, thus far, I’m not too impressed.

Once you open a Twitter account you can invite friends to join or connect with existing members.

I did find that it takes forever for the main Twitter page to load, let alone the sign-up page. Support did say, “Due to an extremely heavy server load, some site functions are intermittently timing out or delayed.” They are working on fixing that.

I do not recommend adding the Twitter javascript badge to your blog while the server is having issues. Keep in mind that Twitter can be rather expensive if you are using your mobile phone, and your next phone bill might show you just how expensive. I did find that the help page of Twittler.com is not very helpful to first time users.

The day-to-day posting of what I am doing aspect doesn’t hold much interest to me. I can do that on my own blog. Do I really need Twitter? I’ll probably remain twitter-less, though I have visited the site a few times and made a few posts.

I’m not sure that I see the value in it.

Looking at the flow of postings on Twitter.com, I am wondering what it is that makes this site so popular? Some users are finding it totally addictive. The Twitter service is booming in popularity, as twitters post about what their eating, family life, the weather and what they are doing on the net.

Some of the messages are of a chatty nature and then there are posts that are just off the wall strange.

Yesterday some user was biding his time until he gets home and touched himself while thinking about peanut butter.

That is just gross.

Today, a guy was at emo’s. He said, ” the porta potties smell like bubble gum.” Um, ok!

Some of the posts are very sexual in nature.

Then there are news profiles on Twitter. Users were updated by knoxnews that a roadside bomb in Iraq killed a soldier from Speedwell and bbcnews reported that four activists were arrested after covering themselves in red paint outside the Faslane naval base.

Anything you post to Twitter goes to your personal page at Twitter.com as well as to a personal timeline though you can choose not to have your messages posted in the personal timeline.

What to make of Twitter? Like any of these networking sites, not everybody’s going to use it and not everyone is going to like it. But no matter if you think it is a good thing or not, Twitter is definitely popular.

If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

I can definitely relate to your skepticism with using twitter and how it actually can be a useful utility. I myself found that their servers tend to be clogged with people posting the unfortunate sexual or otherwise updates.

I do, however, really can see some potential in twitter’s uses if you have a network of friends in multiple areas and need/want to see what you are up to on a real-time basis.

Thanks for the comment. It has spurred me to take a closer look at twitter and possibly write more on how i may use it.

I can barely keep up with Blogger and Facebook so I’ll pass.

Rose, I held out and stayed away from Twitter for a few months after I first heard about it. Then about a week and a half ago I succumbed to the peer pressure.

I’m still undecided as to it’s value. Twittering in IM works for me, but I can’t see getting updates in my phone. (I don’t like text messaging anyway.)

Will Twitter last or is it just a passing fad? I don’t know. But the nay sayers said blogging was a fad too. And now that is rapidly turning into big business. So I’m not so sure I’m willing to discount Twitter completely yet.

I think Twitter is going to be like Apple and Microsoft. Or it might be like Google and Yahoo. Remember 8 tracks and VHS versus Beta?

I haven’t visited it and don’t intend too. As Teena says I barely have time for blogging. We have to decide which is a better fit for our personality and business.
