Blogging Tips: Reserve your own Name as a Domain Name

February 24th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 8 Comments

Is your personal name still available for a domain name? If it is you should register it today.  There are a couple reason’s why. How common is your name?

According to howmanyofme.com there are 8 people in the US with the name Rose DesRochers. Any of those ladies could have registered rosedesrochers.com and if they did, I would not have been able to register it.

Even if you register a personal domain name and never use it, you should do so.  March, 2006  someone registered rose-desrochers.com and used it for a short time for malice vindictive purposes.

The possibility of someone registering your name as a domain name for the same purpose is one reason why you should check to see whether your name is still available and register it.

You can register a name with namecheap.com and leave it as a parked domain.

Should you ever decide to host your blog at your own domain name you can get hosting from Vision This Hosting, which starts at $2.99 a month .

You really should register your name as your own domain.

You should blog from your own domain anyways. When you blog you are building your brand, why waste that?

You wouldn’t spend your own money to fix up an apartment you rent so why do it with your blog?

    Hi
Yes, I am lucky I guess as I have a unique moniker and I have a friend of a friend designing a site for paulchislett.ca – so Thanks for this post – it is a very good idea – who knows? It may be a requirement to have a webpage under our own name someday….

Steve, I have thought of hosting my blog at rosedesrochers.com, but I cringe at the thought of all the work involved moving it over. rosedesrochers.com already has a PR of 5.

Paul, I guess you have a unique name.

B, thank you. I’m glad that I was able to assist you. :)

An ex-boyfriend registered my name for a website in hopes of finding me. It was freaky!
