Boosting your PR and Traffic with Blog Directories

February 19th, 2007 by Rose DesRochers · 15 Comments

I have a critique and one that is not very intelligent. It looks like kenneth Dickson from Investor Blogger has critiqued me for my post on the top ten blog directories to submit to. Let us look at what he says shall we?

“Rose DesRochers (Where to submit your blog | Rose DesRochers), amongst many other bloggers, explicitly recommends bloggers to submit their blogs on Blog Directories. So I decided to verify whether this was important in gaining a wider audience. My conclusion after searching for a few of my favorite bloggers on several of the blog directories at the top of the list is: it is largely a waste of time, and unimportant on how popular your blog really is. I searched for three prominent bloggers in several of the directories on her list. Couldn’t find any listing for any of them.”

Duh, Duh Duh! If he did not find the blogs he was looking for listed than that means that those bloggers did not submit their blog to those directories. Can we say duh again!

Correction Rose DesRochers recommends submitting to directories to increase traffic and PR. I’m  sure that bloggers may receive a few lurkers from submitting to blog directories.

My daughter Miss Pink who is a part time blogger has received 71 hits from the Bloggertalk.net Blog directory and 140 hits from The Today’s Woman Writing Community Blog Directory. I would say that is pretty good for a gal who does not blog regularely. She also holds the second place for Miss Pink in Google.

Dating from 2/12/2007 - 2/18/2007, I have received 36 hits from bloggingfusion.com which is a new blog directory. I just joined bloglines.com two days ago and have received 15 hits from them and 3 hits from technorati.com.

Furthermore all the blogs that I listed have a high PR, therefore increasing your PR and your popularity in Google.

An extremely  important aspect of search engine optimisation is backlinks, therefore submitting to blog directories has SEO advantages.

Everyone wants backlinks, but how do you get them from sites with a high PR? You submit them to the top blog directories.

Those who do not know the faintest about Search engine optimization should really NOT blog about it.

Ask any SEO exspert and they will tell  you that backlinks are a crucial aspect to blog promotion so submitting your blog to blog directories is beneficial if not from the little bit of traffic you’ll receive from it, but the backlink from a site with a high PR.

I couldn’t agree more, just like any good SEO techniques, back links have always placed a heavy role in the search engine algorithms. This is something that is not unknown and most blog authors are well aware of this.

Asking any SEO firm or webmaster that has successfully promoted their website / blog will tell you getting back links from other blogs or in this case blog directories that have a Google Page rank of 3 or above does help increase your exposure!

After all, sometimes the search engines need a little help finding your blog..

The term build it they will come is not true, users can not find your blog if you haven’t listed it in a blog directory, tagged it with Technorati or decided to start a Blogroll with other fellow bloggers..

Swapping links with websites that do get indexed often increases your chance or getting picked up by the spider bots and depending on the blog or directories page rank will increase theirs as well.

Directories, help search engines find your blog URL to help you get indexed by the Major search engines, that’s a given!

So Rose is dead on and provides some very good information and resources for those who are trying to increase their visibility!

The blogger writing the critique of blog directory submissions was making the frequent confusion fo directories with search engines. The difference between the two are basic and important. First of all, the search engines don’t require submissions. They will find your blog all by themselves by following links into the blog. Directories, on the other hand, do require submission for inclusion. Often, directories will be human edited and will not include every blog submitted for inclusion. Search engines rank them all, provided they follow the search engine webmaster guidelines.

It’s not a surprise that “popular blogs” were not found in the blog directories. They simply were not submitted for inclusion. The most heavily trafficked blogs can do well on their own. Where blog directories provide value is for new blogs, low traffic blogs, and blogs on specialized topics. Without the additional links, those low traffic and narrow appeal blogs might get no visitors at all.

Note, however, that many A List heavy traffic blogs are also listed in the most important blog directories. Those bloggers know the SEO value and traffic benefits of added inbound links.

Keep this difference in mind: Blog directories require your blog be submitted for inclusion. Search engines do not.

For what it’s worth, and I would like you to correct me if I’m wrong- there is a large difference between ‘hits’ and ‘visits’. I submitted my blog to a few directories and have recieved 2 ‘hits’ from that.

Racking up ‘hits’ on a counter doesn’t necesarily mean that you are getting more traffic. When those hits turn into ‘visits’, that’s when you know your doing something right?

I might be completely off on that….

I have been to your blog before - it’s very good!

Hello Ryan, thank you for dropping by. To answer your question hits and visits appear to mean to different things, however in this post I was referring to the number of times someone clicked on the link listed in the blog directory to visit the blog.

How many of those are return visitors to the blog, I’m not sure.

I do know that the directory counts unique visits.

You bring up a good point. Counters are set up to measure “page views” not unique visitors.

My blog only counts unique visits.

If you have Google Analytics installed it will tell you your unique visitors, repeat visitors and new visitors.

I had 293 unique visits to my blog today. My biggest traffic this week has come from Google and bloggertalk.net.

Just out of curiosity, I Googled “EDog” and found a link to my blog as the second link on page 2. Googling “Ian Healy” found me on page 2 as well (the “other” Ian Healy is a famous Australian cricket player).

Think I’m doing something right? I’m ranked just over 20,000 in Technorati. Is that pretty good?

    Ian

  • Rose DesRochers CANADA Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0 // Feb 20, 2007 at 1:35 am

Ian did you know they have a name for that? It’s called Ego-googling. I didn’t find you on page two for Ian Healy. You might want to try to get higher results for some of the terms related to your blog. Search some of the words used on your blog and see where you come in. If you search for “The Adventures of the S-Team” or
” Sunday Bloghopping” you come right up. Instead of creating titles like This just in… include the word “Rush” in your title.

Good blog entry Rose. Everyone, except I guess Kevin Dickson knows that having your site listed in Directories increases backlinks, thus increasing your PageRank. I am sure that the time I spent submitting my Internet Security & Privacy Site highly contributed to my Internet Security & Privacy Site index page going from a PR of 3 to 4. This is because the only backlinks I have in Google are from a couple of Directories I submitted my site to.

You see, I am such a neophyte to the blogging world, I’m only just now understanding this whole linking thing, and what it means for my blog.

Thanks for the info–the comments left by others has been most helpful as well!

    Cheers!
