Foreigner 1985 - “In my life theres been heartache and pain. I dont know if I can face it again. Cant stop now, Ive traveled so far to change this lonely life”
The 1980s, was a decade where teens spun on their head and girls had big hair. If you were a teen in the 80s, one thing you won’t forget is the music and you still might be enjoying that music today.
Who could forget such performers and groups as Daryl Hall & John Oates, Men At Work, Foreigner, Whitney Houston, Atlantic Starr, Falco, Culture Club, Phil Collins, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Starship, Wang Chung, Cutting Crew, The Eurythmics and Night Ranger. Their music shaped our life and our heart.
On February 04, 1986 “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne and Friend ruled the Billboard charts. I was 17 that year.
Who’s your very favorite 80s group or performer and what was your favorite song of theirs?
If you liked this post, why not buy me a coffee?

There was no music in the ’80’s. The ’80s’ never happened. They are a figment of your imagination. If you want to talk about music, go up to 1979, then skip to 1990 and move forward. The ’80’s? Fuhgetaboutit.

JHS, not a fan of the 80s I gather? The 80s happened and I survived it.

duran duran was my favorite! favorite songs, well, all of them, but i loved “wild boys”. in fact, i still love 80’s music, and my husband and I met in college at a bar on 80’s night ten years ago. i am happy that we left everything else back in the 80’s, though I have recently spotted jelly shoes, sadly. but i am happy that the music lives on!

What’s JHS talking ’bout????
1980s were revolutionary in music industry!
Remember, MTV launched in US on Aug. 1, 1981 changing the way music was delivered and packaged. “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles was the first music video played on MTV.
Hip Hop and Rap emerged from the urban black streets in the early 1980s.
Hard Rock hit a peak with bands like Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Aerosmith, Poison, Ratt, Skid Row, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses, and AC/DC.
Pop music artists/groups of the 80s still receive lots of airplay and now the re-mix format is bringing back many of these tunes because they have become such a part of our culture.
Here’s just a few of the 80s artists who influenced that era and many continue to have a strong presence in the music industry: The Police, Pat Benatar, Lionel Richie, The Go-Go’s, Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Van Halen, Foreigner, Phil Collins, Huey Lewis and the News, Juice Newton, Bryan Adams, Queen, U2, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Olivia Newton-John, Prince, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Amy Grant, Laura Branigan and Bon Jovi.
But enough of the harumph about JHS’ comment. My response to your question, my favourite 80s tune is Gloria by Laura Branigan. We used to dance our faces off to that song. It was re-released in 2004 and was a hit again right up until Branigan’s sudden death that year.

Human by the Human League was my very favorite song, but Shout by Tears for Fears was a close second. Actually, TFF ended up being one of my favorite groups.

Loved the 80’s. My daughter and I watched, “Breakfast Club”. She thinks the 80’s were so cool.
My favorite 80’s song had to be Madonna’s Holiday or Prince’s 1999.
Great idea.

Easy peasy. Duran Duran was my favorite band. But my fave 80s tune is True by Spandau Ballet - my first dance with a boy in jr. high! I posted a flash back on my site for you

Carmen, I think all girls were a fan of Duran Duran. They were not on my list. In my early teens it was Corey Heart, Bryan Adams, and Bruce Springsteen that I drooled over. I was a big fan of Boy George and Air Supply played over and over on my ghetto blaster. I’m shocked that I did not wear out the tape. In my later teens I drooled over Bon Jovi.
Christine, who could forget the 80s star Molly Ringwald. I use to dance to ‘Holiday’ at the clubs when I turned 19.
Katie, my children still enjoy music from the 80s.
Mary, Tears For Fears was an excellent group.
Christieo, one thing that we can’t leave back in the 80s in the music and that is so cool how you and hubby met.
Larry, excellent post and thank you so much for sharing that history with us. I was only 13 when Gloria came out and I remember the song well. I had a half sister whose name is Gloria and I use to play that song whenever she came over.

Oh, I have quite a few – but here are some picks;
Literally anything by OMD, Human League (Unlimited Orchestra is an 80’s gem, if you don’t have it – trust me), Grace Jones, The Cure, The Cult, Strangers, Madness…..but I listen to stuff like the excellent Boards of Canada these days (they really are something else).

Like the new look Rose,
I was in High School in the late 80’s. I liked most of the people mentioned, but I was a big Poision and A-ha fan. Still have both of them on my I-Pod now.

So many songs, so little time.
I love the song “Missing You” by John Waite…I still do!
Today I put up my Jr. Prom pictures and talked about the music played there. I can’t believe you got me playing this 80’s theme week.
It has been a true blast from the past digging up those old pictures.
Thanks Rose.

Andrew that is quite the list.
And yD thanks! I was a fan of A-Ha too.
Chris I love Missing you by John Waite. In 2006, there was a remake of Missing You as a duet with Alison Krauss. I’m glad you’re playing.

I can barely remember the 80s! It seems so long ago. I graduated from high school in 1980 and university in 1983. I got married (the first time) in 1986 and moved to Toronto in 1987. So it was a busy decade!
I listened to a lot of music back then … yet I can’t think of any fav groups or songs.
