Commas: I Think I’m Going Insane
March 7th, 2006 by Rose DesRochers · 6 Comments
I’m constantly worried about where to stick the comma. I’m afraid that I’m abusing the poor thing. I’m constantly sticking her where she is not needed , and then I leave her out of places where she is needed. Commas are driving me insane.

You are so right, Rose. Comma’s are much maligned. My personal weak spot is the apostrophe. I put it where it needn’t go, and wedge it between letters that should sit close together.
You’re certainly not alone in your frustration.

I simply adore commas. I am particularly fond of the Oxford comma, but find that, for many, it has fallen out of fashion and often from grace. ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’ is one of may favorite popular texts.

Commas are my weak point too. My husband always teases me when he proof-reads some of the short stories I write. I was always taught to put the comma where there would be a natural break if you were reading the piece out-loud, but then I learn that isn’t always the case. Go figure.

lol! Rose, breath, in… out…in… out… Do you know what I think?… I think the commas themselves have forgotten where they go.
